- Oakland native Michael Franti forms Michael Franti and Spearhead, and the new band release their first album Home.
- Rock band Smash Mouth forms in San Jose.

- Major League Soccer expands to San Jose with the development of the San Jose Clash. They later change their name to the Earthquakes in 1999.
- Cal-Berkeley basketball standout and San Francisco native Jason Kidd is drafted second overall in the NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks.
