Volunteer Spotlight on Natosha Safo

Each week we’ll be profiling one of our Super Bowl 50 Host Committee volunteers, learning a bit more about how and why they got involved with the Host Committee Volunteer Program.

This week our volunteer spotlight is on Natosha Safo from Oakland.

SB50: Why are you volunteering for the San Francisco Bay Area Super Bowl 50 Host Committee?

NS: My full time job is in City Hall here in San Francisco. I’ve had the very cool inside experience of seeing the City plan for and execute 3 Giants World Series parades, the America’s Cup in 2013, two ceremonies gifting Golden State Warriors the key to the City and other big events. It is so much fun seeing the bay area cometogether to celebrate sports events. Once the opportunity opened up to volunteer for the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee, I signed up right away knowing I’d be surrounded by a great group of engaged and friendly folks.

SB50: To you, what makes the Super Bowl special?

NS: Standard holidays are often for families. Because of this, November through January, you may not get to see your friends that much. The Super Bowl is a holiday for your chosen family of friends. Everyone is finally back in town and settling in to the New Year and because America loves football so much, traditionally people plan around the Super Bowl and will show up to parties they get invited to! The day is full of great food, drink, multiple televisions, laughter, cash winners and inevitably at least one person that ends up watching their team lose.

SB50: How are you involved in the community otherwise?

NS: My day job is community and economic development, so I get to work with San Francisco businesses and residents every day. Beyond personally supporting local charities throughout the year, I also get my friends together to volunteer time a tour local food bank every year. I also look for ways for us to volunteer time during the holiday season. The past couple of years we’ve volunteered with Alternative Family Service’s Holiday Event for foster care youth.

SB50: Where is your favorite place in the Bay Area?

NS: That’s a tough question to answer. I love spending time on the trails at both Tennessee Valley in Mill Valley and Lafayette Reservoir in Lafayette. I love seeing shows at the Greek Theater in Berkeley and the Fox Theater in Oakland. Happy hours and championship game watching is always fun at Mad Oak bar in Oakland. Finally, being able to attend the Warriors, the Athletics and the Raiders games all in Oakland over the years really has defined my time in the bay area. Oakland loves its sports teams, and nothing compares to the energy of getting geared up and going to games!
