Each week we’ll be profiling one of our Super Bowl 50 Host Committee volunteers, learning a bit more about how and why they got involved with the Host Committee Volunteer Program.
This week our volunteer spotlight is on David Torres from Hayward.
SB50: How did you get involved with the Host Committee’s volunteer program?
DT: I saw the opportunity on LinkedIn. I’m new to the area and the opportunity to put in time and get to know people from all walks of life, from all over the Bay Area. As well as see exciting new places on 50 Tour and gain insight about the Super Bowl is definitely a once in a lifetime experience.
SB50: What makes the Super Bowl special to you?
DT: When I first came to this country from Mexico with my family, the first thing we pulled out of the moving truck was our TV. There was a game on (at the time we didn’t even know it was football) with a team wearing white and red jerseys. The white jersey team won and we decided that they were our favorite team. That game turned out to be Super Bowl VII, Miami Dolphins vs. Washington Redskins. That is always the story we tell about the Super Bowl, it’s neat to have that kind of memory ingrained around such a big event.
SB50: What do you like most about the Bay Area?
DT: The diversity that it offers. I like the richness of culture that is fostered among our community, that inspires me every day. The people here are serious about making sure culture and traditions are nurtured through generations.
SB50: What has been your favorite volunteering moment so far?
DT: Volunteering on the 50 Tour; I enjoy listening to the experiences of people who have a connection to the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders Vince Lombardi Trophies, and Bay Area football. I also love hearing where they were during big football moments like ‘The Catch’.
