- Stanford Ph.D. students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin create a search engine with the name of google.stanford.edu, which later becomes Google Inc.
- The San Jose Lasers of the American Basketball League open up play at the San Jose State Event Center. The team would play two-and-a-half seasons before folding along with the rest of the league in 1998.
